Just my two cents on the "black dot that stands out like a sore foot"
issue. Most of what I have read in this thread seems to be due to some
Fiery-like hijacking of color management done in the RIP described.
I, like Darrin, do not wish to see dots in the highlights of prints made
with inksets including LC and LM. Of the six inks, only C, M and K are
really "visible" if surrounded by white paper. I therefore make custom
printer profiles using ColorBlind Pro (now version 4.0, until recently
3.6) with black start at 40 or 50. These are religiously respected by my
Wasatch SoftRIP. I just checked the numbers on the black strip of the
linearization chart using one of these profiles. Due to the
linearization curve already prepared in the RIP prior to profiling, the
70% input patch still has 0% K output, and the 76% input patch has 2% K.
Also, maximum use of LC and LM (a RIP setting) will take care of the C
and M dots in the highlights. This is just an example, but I can get any
black generation I want, controlled by my profiler and faithfully
executed by my RIP.
In the proofing configuration, the input CMYK to the RIP's color
management is the output profile for the destination press, and its
black generation is completely irrelevant to what I want output on the
inkjet proof. I just want the same CIE Lab values, and my customers like
it if they cannot see the dots :-)

You can't always want what you get.
