If I quit ColorFlex and then restart it, the new Previews are fine.
Hmmmmmm.... I'm beginning to think that there is some Finder corruption
taking place with the current mix of software. So far I haven't been
able to identify the exact nature of the problem, let alone finger the
culprit, but there seems to be a correlation between the introduction of
Photoshop 6 and the gremlins in the attic. What you just described, and
what ColorFlex did for me the other day, are really, REALLY SPOOKY
occurrences. This stuff is coming way out of left field - not your
run-of-the-mill extensions conflict.
Starting back with version 3, Photoshop has always been my number-one,
rock-solid, crash-proof application. I mean it NEVER went down. Now I'm
running into all kinds of system freezes, quit freezes, self-corrupting
pref files, etc. with any number/combinations of applications. I mean,
when was the last time that FileMaker Pro - just twiddling its thumbs in
the background, no less - brought your Mac down? ...or that Photoshop,
sitting on a totally inactive computer, throws a type 10 error out of the
blue? The ONLY significant changes to my setup have been PS6 and System
9.1 - but then I've done a clean disk-wipe and reinstall of ALL
applications, fonts, and 9.0.4 from CD, and then a re-upgrade to 9.1
after a week of 9.0.4 made no difference.
I've shut down all background processes (FBC Indexing, Font Reserve,
Folder Launcher, Time Synchro, Epson Whatever, etc.) and whittled my
extensions to nothing, without seriously stabilizing things. Throwing
out Finder, Mac OS, File Sharing, etc., etc. prefs seems to calm things
down for a while, but then these stupid, baffling events start to happen.
AND IT ALL SEEMS TO START AFTER PHOTOSHOPPING! I can Excel, FileMaker,
e-mail, web-around, without the sky falling, but once I begin to
Photoshop, Illustrate, and play around with their various camp followers
(i.e.: ColorFlex), then weird and seemingly random problems start to
appear - like the ColorFlex quit/crash/self-corrupting prefs and haunted
previews. .....and don't talk to me about viruses. Dr. Norton's given
my Mac the anal exam on that one.
At least for now, my intuition is pointing toward something that is
corrupting Mac preferences - at least tossing them seems to quiet things
down for a while - and my hunch is that the Big Tuna, Mr. P. Shop
himself, has something to do with it.
