Apple has a lot riding on LCD's since they have discontinued all but one of
their CRT monitors. Let me start by saying the Cinema is a beautiful display,
and if I did nothing but CAD or other non-color-critical work, I'd use it in
a minute. But even with the absurdly expensive combination of a SpectroLino
and ProfileMaker 3.1 the Apple has been demoing for this use (absurd in terms
of cost for monitor only calibration, not necessarily as part of a total
package) the results don't look much different that what you get for 3
percent of that cost with a Monitor Spyder and PhotoCal. I suspect that
affordable, optimized profiling solutions for the better LCDs will be
forthcoming in the next year, but currently the best advice is still to do
all color critical work on a CRT, and to take claims of current LCD
calibration with a grain of salt.
