PostScript for Inkjets

Dear Friends,
I have been very frustrated with my "first step" toward ColorSync implementation: namely, finding a PostScript software RIP to use on my standalone Macintosh G3.
I have an Epson 1520 (should still be serviceable) and have tried Birmy version 2 and Epson Stylus RIP (which I suspect are pretty much the same RIP with a different interface). Neither of them will simulate overprinted colors, and both are generally just clumsy to use, memory, and OS hogs. I have been reading pretty bad things about PressReady. I would prefer not to use up a USB port with the dongle I understand the new Birmy requires. Whew!
I don't think there is a PostScript card for my Epson 1520. Is there any reasonable way to proof PostScript-requiring jobs to that machine? (By this I mean the typical XPress or Illustrator file that have EPS images placed in them.)
Thanks for any advice.
