For the Epson driver, which was the original issue, yes, its profiled as an
RGB device, thats all it can handle as an OS level printer. With a RIP its
different, because the typical goal there is to proof CMYK documents on the
way to press, or to simply control the black functions for art printing.
Don't make things difficult; a CMYK profile for a CcMmYK device is simple and
easy, not really much different than a CMYK profle for a CMYK device, the
light channels are hacked into the C&M channels after the fact and not
separate channels in the sense you speak of. Building true six channel
profiles for these devices is beyond what many RIPs can process, and
certainly more than the typical user is looking for.
True, there are issues for the Fiery RIPs, but that is a fact of life we have
lived with for a long time...
