I thought so too but it isn't true for the Epsons. Richard Krawitz who
is one of the people writing the Linux gimp-print drivers says there's
very little done on hardware/firmware level in the printers themselves.
So it is correct that RGB/CMYK ICC profiles will be alright for the
CcMmYK drivers + RIPs but the computation of CMYK>CcMmYK is done in the
driver software itself. That also indicates that a true 6 channel driver
is possible for the Epsons. YARC claims it has a true CMYKOG driver for
the Epson 9000.
