Subject: Re: Profiling the Roland 8 Color Machine
What happened to Amicable? Was it sold to Scanvec, or is this an
entirely new ColorChoice?
ColorChoice 3.0 that I run on my FJ-50 was written by Amicable Technologies.
Hmm, I'll have to check my spelling but, yes, Amiable Tech was
gobbled I believe last August. Also, if you are running RCC ver 3.0
and anyone tells you RCC 4.0 doesn't support the FJ50, CJ500
printers, it's bunk. Version 4.0 does support the Roland line, not
just the FJ500 (as I was told) and it has some nice features like
being able to alter your ink limits and GCR directly if you're not
getting the punch from the profile you're using. It also has a nice
new screen (FMXpress) which RIPs like a demon and limits moire
(especially nice on low res-bidirectional solid printing and hi-res
proofing).
IMHO, the Roland Hexachrome pigment inks are nearly as bright as dye
inks in the green-red portion of the gamut, but blues are not so hot.
Yup, and most our clients love big blue skies. In photographs its not
so much an issue. Though in the fine art realm, the artist's palette
usually requires a little compromise.
But this is really a no-brainer -- does it need to last longer than a
few years? If so, you're going to have to find the brightest
pigmented inks you can find, and live with it. If not, just go with
dyes -- they're not only brighter, they're cheaper as well.
BTW: Roland also supports bright dye inks, at least in their
six-color printers.
And in the eight-color too. One of the nice things about Roland is
the ability to flip between inks sets (if you don't mind dumping ink
in the process). The FJ500 eight-ink allows 4PIG 4DYE in the same
setup if you want. Nice option, but I'll stick with cmykOrGrLcLm. My
Pantone solids-sans-banding just went up a major notch on the FJ500
and for the first time in while I'm touched. The patterning in my
photos looks like film grain... (emotional pause here for effect). I
love you guys...(I'm talking to my hardware here).
