Recently I've begun receiving DCS files from one of my clients and these
Photoshop files have a 5th plate that is a Pantone color - original use
for files was on offset press. The layout is designed in Quark 4.04, but
Quark doesn't seem to know what to do with these DCS files unless I
print to separations. I need to print as a composite file for use with
Onyx 5.0 which is then going to large format inkjet.
The best way I've found for handling these files is to do profile to
profile conversion from CMYK to RGB with a relative intent. I then merge
the spot plate back into the other channels and save my file now as RGB
since Onyx will handle the RGB conversion with no problems.
This preserves the PMS color for me and also keeps the gradient smooth.
I've tried simply merging the spot plate when the file is in CMYK, but
the PMS color shifts far to much since it is out of gamut.
Are they other ways of dealing with this? Is there perhaps some
extension for Quark that will allow me to postscript a composite file
with the 5th plate, and then would Onyx convert the 5th plate to process
color?
Wish I had more time to get into the guts of this one (excuse the
graphic gooieness), but on the fly I recommend you upgrade to Quark
ver 4.1. Go to www.QuarkXpress.com and download mxu400-410us.hqx.
This will update your 4.04 and allow you to print RGB directly from
Xpress. Previous versions require the PrintRGB Extension, which is a
pain because to use it you have to boot with it in the quark
extensions folder, then to print process colors you have to reboot
with it physically out of the Quark Extensions folder. (Turning it
off in the Quark Extensions manager doesn't work.)
