Hello List Readers:
I would like to draw on the collect wisdom of this list to get some
ideas on a problem
that I see from time to time with some of my drum scans. I will start by
describing in
my best terms the problem that I am seeing, I will follow with equipment
setup and
workflow. When output to Epson printers the problem is not seeable, when
output to LightJet film recorders the problem can be seen on the film.
I regularly see blotchiness or chunkiness (good scientific terms) in
gradations from
my drum scanner. Areas in a file that display large gradations just are
not as smooth
as I feel they should be and in some cases they are very near to
exhibiting a form of
banding. This occurs in any color not some bright vivid saturated color
and in any
film format size from 35mm to 8x10.
Equipment; Howtek 4500 drum scanner, Trident 4.0 r42d PE, Mac G4, 450,
OS
9.1.
Workflow; Scan RGB 8 bit into my monitor space which is ColorMatch RGB,
no
input profile. Open in PS ColorMatch RGB.
Therefore what do you think is causing this problem? Should I be
scanning 16 and
then open in ColorMatch or a wider working space. Should the scanner be
profiled
and then select the scanner profile as an input profile in Trident or
maybe some other idea, or forget it it cannot be solved. What do the
collective minds say.
Thanks,
Mark
