ColorSync uses it when there is no

Right, the 'Generic XXX Profile' set are unity profiles.
ColorSync requires an ICC profile for every color space, even if the
color space and the PCS are the same.
The reason ColorSync recreates the 'Generic XXX Profile' set if you
try to move any of them from the top level of the ColorSync Profiles
folder is not least that a unity profile is also required for CIELab
and CIEXYZ.
So if you have a D50 Lab image then technically ColorSync also
requires a D50 Lab data color space profile.
This isn't a matter of the CMM as say the HDM CMM doesn't require a
data color space for Lab, but rather of the ColorSync architecture.
IOW it's something of a legacy thing that will go away in time. Right
now it may be confusing, but as ColorSync manages the unity profiles
automatically, you really can't go wrong. But in terms of human
interface design I think it would make sense to make these profiles
invisible parts of ColorSync itself.
