I'm interested in upgrading an aging Epson Stylus EX to a newer
inkjet that can handle paper up to 13" wide. The main issue is
permanence of prints, although a slight boost in quality (tonal
smoothness) would be nice. The prints are displayed (indoors); this
is NOT a proofer. I currently notice significant fading within about
a year to 18 months with standard Epson inks and various glossy
papers.
I was thinking of going to the 1270 with "lightfast" inks, in spite
of the ozone issue. Another choice I was considering is a refurbished
1200 with 3rd party (Lysonic or MIS) inks. I also seem to recall that
Canons or H-Ps do better with longevity than Epsons right out of the
box -- Any suggestions?
Now that Epson has the "intellidge" chip on the inks (such as in the
1270), getting an Epson printer with the thought of switching to 3rd
party inks is no longer a valid reason (except the older Epsons). But
since the 3rd party inks tend to have a smaller gamut from what I've
read, that was always a compromise anyway.
So is the 1270 a reasonable choice? I recall people saying that its
canned profiles are excellent, and since I've had mixed results
building printer profiles I was wondering if this printer can help
with BOTH permanence AND profiling (ie, no need for a custom profile
-- what a concept! -- as long you use Epson inks and papers, and you
have NO choice on the inks anyway).
(BTW, I do know that the 1270 is being discontinued in favor of a
1290 -- so it's a good time to get a 1270!)
