Tim,
I have worked with this scanner since 1984 and IMHO it this CMYK drum scanner
still produces very high quality scans if you know color. There is
even a document about how to profile this type of scanner by Don
Hutchinson.
While the Crosfiled line of scanners do produce high quaility results
the do have a reputation for requiring a reasonable amount of
service. They also need a climate controlled environment as well as
special power requirements. A 636 is not a desktop scanner though it
can be interfaced to a Mac or Windows computer. If you are
considering buying a used one you might call Technical Services
International group. They do the service on these types of scanners.

If there is something specific you want to know about it you might
want to contact me off line.
