hmm...
we do one type of job over and over. for our needs in-RIP seps are ideal as
long as it's operator-proofed e.g. only installing one CMYK profile and
assuming one source profile. this would be easy to do in an all-RGB workflow
where the images all originate in-house and the CMYK profile is based on the
fact that we always print the same kind of stuff on the same stock using the
same inks to the same target press density. this business is a little weird
but this one aspect of it really simplifies a lot of things.
I can certainly see why this approach would not work (or would not work
well) in a commercial printing environment.
