I think Marc did a good job of this part. I guess the simplest
explanation is that it is a "canned" transformation. Everything that
went into a transformation (CMM, profiles, rendering intents, quality
settings, etc) is "set" in the device link profile
and 2) the practical uses for, a device link
profile, and why would I need one?
My favorite use is when you don't like or trust the CMM on the
machine where you want your transforms to occur. For instance, if you
really like the Imation CMM, then you can use it on your Mac to
create a device link that preserves black etc. Then you can send the
link down to the RIP and use it there even if you don't have the
Imation CMM installed. You will get the same transform you setup on
the Mac.
