Who's tried it? What do you think?
EZ Color 2 was introduced at Seybold Boston this spring, which is usually an
appropriate venue for such announcements. Unfortunately Gretag Macbeth was
just across the aisle trumpeting the EyeOne so loudly that many of those who
should have noticed EZ2 were distracted. Not that the EyeOne didn't deserve
some fanfare, but it was simply an unfortunate coincidence for Monaco.
EZ2 deals with several issues I have complained about with previous versions,
and closes the feature gap with ColorVision products on several fronts. So
the waters are even muddier for the first time color management user trying
to determine what package, or what individual affordable products, to
purchase. Monaco has the more comprehensive bundle, ColorVision has the more
accomplished individual products, but does not address all the elements EZ
Color offers.
For those printers which both bundles profile well, its really down to the
recognizable differences between the Monaco color engine and the ColorVision
one, each of which has a subtle flavor of its own. For such printers EZ may
hold a slight edge for patch matching accuracy, and ColorVision seems to
offer a better perceptual rendering. There are still some printers where
ColorVision simply does a better job, but Monaco has reduced that list by
adding a special button in EZ2 for dealing the the Epson 2000p, which should
also help with other Epson encapsulated pigment ink printers. With
Praxisoft's WiziWYG getting less and less attention its really down to these
two as an intro choice, unless a users intends to start out at the
Professional level with a spectro patch reader.
