Stuart,
Thanks for the reply, but I have one problem with it...sorry! You state
that:
A4 1/16 sq.m 210.22 x 297.30mm 8.277 x 11.705ins
But then go on to say:
Since mm are the base units, the 25.4 conversion should be made from 210 x
297 (8.268 x 11.693ins)
The inches figures don't match which means that the 25.4mm conversion is not
precise. One reply I received (Thanks Jan) stated that A4 in points 595 x
842 (as printed from Quark). Typically postscript has 72 points to the
inch........
I did the math to 5 DP's (please tell me if I went wrong):
Conversion of points to Inches
595 / 72 = 8.26389
842 / 72 = 11.69444
Conversion of inches to mm
8.26389 * 25.4 = 209.90278
11.69444 * 25.4 = 297.03878
This as you can see if a third set of figures. Going from mm to inches I
come up with the same figures as at the top of this e-mail namely, 8.26772 x
11.69291. Only, in PS speak, should I start from points, inches,
millimetres, the length of my right big toe or what? As far as I can tell
it's points, but any input would be appreciated.
My issue here is one of scaling and accuracy of unit conversion either down
or up. If I have an A5 image in inches convert to mm and then scale to A0
my image will not be the correct size. Probably only out by 1-2 mm but that
is enough when tiling images. Now the obvious answer is set the size you
want and then convert it as you will not be multiplying a very small error
but this is not necessarily acceptable for my needs. I know I'm being
pedantic and VERY picky but I am trying to be as accurate as I can in my
current project.
Am I going to go mad with this one? :) Should I shoot myself now?
