Due to the present state of page-layout applications, leaving things in RGB
up to this point is a difficult task. Can you explain why you are not
satisfied with using EPS or the OPI solution (a common workaround).
Another possibility, which many shops are doing, is to do the CMYK
conversion of the images at the time of or just before placing them into the
OPI sytem. That way you avoid all the headaches you currently experience.
In some cases, however, this is not possible. Example - a printer who has
multiple printing machines and doesn't know where the job will go until the
last minute. In this case, the OPI workaround is generally employed, which
is why I am curious as to why you are not happy with it.
To get an idea of the limitations of RGB or LAB workflows, as well as
explain just about all the possible combinations of RGB/LAB/CMYK workflows,
I highly recommend Jan Peter Homann's book, Digital Color Management (in
German). I think it is the best reference available for your situation.
Regards.
