(Proceed with caution, ye old "input-centric" vs. "print-centric" debate
continues:)
So, previously I threw out some ideas about converting from ScannerRGB to
WorkingSpaceRGB with the main question(s) being: 1) do I convert to a
print-friendly space from the scanner, resulting in either gamut compression
or gamut clipping but allowing an "easier" (dare I say using a single
"default" rendering intent?) RGB to CMYK conversion OR 2) convert from
scanner to a "scanner-friendly" WS where NO compression and clipping occur
and make a more "intelligent" (read: trial and error!) approach converting
RGB to CMYK and choosing image-specific rendering intents?
Let's assume that option 2 is the "correct" approach. Now on to choosing a
"scanner-friendly" working space. My options are as I see it:
1) Try every known working space that's out there and try to find a nice
"fit" to my scanner(s). I shall dub this the Goldilocks and Three Bears
approach ("This space is too big! This one's too small! Oh, this one's JUST
RIGHT!") ;-) Trouble is, what if all the spaces I have to choose from are
deficient in one area or another?
2) Come up with a custom working space that fit's my scanner to a tee.
Now here's where I have this gaping hole in my knowledge: how do I create a
custom working space? Is it as "simple" as inspecting the scanner profile
and finding the primaries and white point and picking a gamma out of the
hat? I guess what I'm looking for is essentially a scanner profile that
behaves like a working space, in other words that's well-behaved and linear
in regards to gray balance but has primaries that match the scanner. I don't
even know if that is possible or is conflicting requirements.
Somebody, show me the way to enlightenment and creating custom working
spaces.....
