A decent way to start, if you're new to PS6, is to choose US Prepress
Defaults (or whatever it says) as a starting point then customize from
there. Of course, as soon as you change anything, it will change to
"Custom". This is fine. Once you're done customizing your color settings,
save these setting as "My Color Settings" or whatever name you want to give
them.

Fine, then change your Color Management Policies to "Convert to Working
<color space>". That's better than "Off" but still not as good a choice as
"Preserve Embedded..." and then doing all conversions using "Convert to
Profile", in my opinion.

Again, if you consistently use "Convert to Profile" and choose your
rendering intent there, the intent in the Color Settings doesn't mean much
since you're not really using it.
