A CCD slide scanner will not compare to a drum scan by a qualified operator.
That said, of course a slide scanner is much easier to use and gives
surprisingly good quality for most applications. There are also several very
good buys in slide scanners these days. For example, Kodak's RFS3600 is now
about $900 and they have a promotion to send the purchaser 100 rolls of
professional level 35mm film for free after the sale.
Since that film is worth about $5 a roll the scanner is a steal at $900. (My
company sells the product so I'm biased but I think all will agree it's a
excellent value).
The Nikon 4000 is another that is very popular. You're more in the $1500
range here but a little higher resolution and also a lot of scanner for the
money.
