I'm curious. I have often seen it stated (by Gruce Fraser, among others) that it is best to conform to a monitor gamma of 1.8 on the Mac and 2.2 on PCs in order to lose the smallest number of levels in the video card (see p. 140 of Real World Photoshop 6).
Do modern video cards use a different native gamma setting based on the platform they have been designed for?

This is a very good choice for a calibrated Mac system. Using a lowered gamma and white point actually forces the monitor away from it's natural state. It also is in perfect agreement with Adobe 98 as it too is 2.2Gamma @ 6500K.
