Hi,
gamma is handled different by differnt platforms, on PCs there is normally
no gamma correction. So gamma has to be corrected in software, in general
started by 2.2 to compensate a roughly 2.5 power function. Macintosh systems
have gamma corretion of 1.4 onboard, so additional gamma correction of 1.8
is required (2.5/1.4=1.8) to raise the outgoing signal to the monitor. So
some rgb-spaces could be device independent if every computer-system would
handle gamma-correction the same. In my opinion and without knowing every
technichal detail, the best way to handle gamma is by hardware correction. I
think no additional software correction should be used to avoid bending the
spaces to compensate "dot gain" on monitors, but maybe there are more subtle
reasons ...
