0 to 255 with nothing in between is 8 bit/channel data; 0 to 255 with lots of
levels hidden between is high bit data. Only 255 levels will be shown on
screen or graphed by Photoshop, but if you stretch the gamma (midpoint)
slider on the highbit file, it won't "comb-out" like the 8 bit version since
it will fill in from the invisible levels in between.
