I have a few questions regarding CMYK output profiles for the group. The
way we are working right now is we are separating all of our scans and
digital captures into CMYK using an ICC profile of our proofer running a
built-in SWOP simulation. IRIS calls it IRIS PRO SWOP (CGATS TR001).
Basically we use the IRIS software (IQ Pro) to re-linearize the device a
few times a day.
What I want to know is would it be better to disable the built-in color
setups (set to "none") and use a ICC device link (or a source/target
combination) built with the full gamut of the device on the publication
media and the US Web Coated (SWOP)v2 profile supplied with Photoshop 6 as a
target? The new SWOP profile seems to do a slightly cleaner
separation...but it all comes down to getting a good press proof...right?
Is separating all of our scans with the proofer profile running a SWOP
simulation (supposedly based on the TR001 data set) the right thing to do?
I suspect not, but our primary printer uses the same proofers running the
same color setup. Its a little disconcerting because it is a proprietary
calibration/linearization procedure, therefore "invisible". What CMM is it
using? What rendering intent is it using? I like to know what's going on
with this sort of thing. The IRIS software is nice, because everything is
done within one piece of software, but if I can get better press proofs by
linearizing the printer with another CMS, like ColorBlind, I'd be all over
it.
Any thoughts on any of this?
