Hello,
I've been off list for quite a while and am just finding time to address
a fairly old problem that I've had. Actually, it may be two different
issues and I would welcome any input from the lists' collective
intelligence.
Here's the system background: a Power Tower Pro 225, Stylus Photo EX,
Photoshop 5.0.2, Applevision 750 monitor calibrated and profiled. An old
setup, I know, but it has produced very faithful prints for my
photography portfolios for the most part. I generally shoot Fuji Provia
F film and have the film scanned as 72Mb Pro Photo CD.
Here are the problems that I've had. First, if there is a round object
in the image ( a tomato, e.g.), with light wrapping around it, the image
may look fine on the monitor, but a print will break the tonal gradation
into harsh steps. If I look at channels, I can usually find at least one
where those steps are pretty apparent, if not identical to what's
happening on the print. Second, and this one is a current image I'm
working on, I have a shot of a plate of pasta with red sauce on it.
Looks great on the monitor, pretty darn close to the film, but a print
renders the highlight side of the tomato sauce wildly red, unnaturally
pumped up. In both cases, I wind up spending a lot of time going in and
doing some kind of brute force retouching to overcome the problem.
What are your thoughts for the cause or causes of these problems? Is the
Pro CD scan unable to capture the gradations from the film smoothly
enough? Is the Epson driver/printer having a problem rendering this
stuff? I can spend a bit of $ to fix this, but not tons, so your
suggestions will be valuable to me to so I can try to apply the money
bandage to the right wound.
Thanks in advance,
Peter Braune
