I have been using an RGB workflow, scanning on a Optronics Falcon, for many years and
our standard procedure is to apply the least level of sharpening at the time of scanning.
I believe this is some form of hardware sharpening and not USM.
A couple of clients have requested us to not do this, but most just appreciate how clean and
sharp our scans are.
When I do work that goes out to a press I use the photoshop USM after sizing and CMYK
conversion, and for work that goes to our own Iris or Epson printers we use a wide range of
things from nothing at all to elaborate layer and channel controlled procedures.
The scanner software has a very sophisticated USM that allows for high and low cutoffs of sharpening and variable rates for the RGB channels, but we almost never use it.
