I get your point, but I still think you are one amongst few.
At a big repro-company the leading scanner-operator, tried to make his
collegues make some RGB-scans with the best possible match to the dias
colors.
Without the ICC-profile they all made different results, and only 1 of
them were
good enough to be used. They were all experiensed with CMYK-scans, but
with RGB they fell through...
WITH the ICC-profile, they all made usefull, ok scans, that looked the
same.
The result may be better if YOU scan it, and fine-tune it in the scanning
process.
But they needed consistant, usefull quality that any user could easisy
make, not PERFECT quality
that required a ;nerd+ spending time in front of an exspensive scanner.
Sometimes ICC-profiles are NOT used to get better result, but to get more
consistant results,
and to make color management easier to use.
My point is, you are right, and so am I. It all depends on your needs.
