You make a good point and one I am in agreement with. Having
experience on drum scanners and the Imacon system I find scanner
profiles for lack of a better word useless. I don't expect my client to
pay me top dollar to blindly follow what a profile will give me. In
theory it will work if indeed the original is perfect. This is where I
feel there is a contradiction. Strive as I may as a photographer rarely
have I created a perfect piece of film. If I know its less than perfect
than I must correct it. I feel the best place to do this is at the
scan. However if I make changes to my scanner settings than my profile
is no longer of any value. Now add to this mix an image that needs some
help which most do than I can see no reason to use it. With any print
or printer you have a range of tone you can reproduce most images
benefit by using all this range. Keep your gray values neutral and the
rest usually falls into place. Forget about profiling color neg. film
which more and more people are using professionally. Yes I know the
scanner has its particular color space which is different from my
working. I just can't help myself from making it better. I just feel
I am smarter than any scanner profile.
