Mr. Holmegaard already responded to the issue regarding the two types of
scanner software, but even in the case of the static kind, there is a reason
to make a profile (of course, IMHO one that you have to edit ;-) if you are
scanning in RGB). Of course I cannot speak for everywhere, but at least in
the many service bureaus, print shops, etc., the scanning technicians are
dedicated to mounting and unmounting cylinders while scanning hundreds of
images with a curve that was done at the time of the scanner installation or
after the last reparation. If you make a good profile you will not solve
all of the images' problems "blindly" as you correctly state, but some of
the images will be ready to print and the others will range from a little
bit better to a lot better. If the images are coming in better, even though
not perfect, the gain is very evident when you consider that this means less
time, multiplied by each image, for the retouching technicians.
