Who told you that? The 5500 is a good choice for fine dithering but the
questions of metamerisms will give you accurate proofs only for controlled
lighting conditions. In other words if your proof travels with the digital
file , it'll look different in the art director's office, service bureau,
printers proof room.

So if you're monitor is calibrated and you're workflow is correctly set up
then the Best demo was bogus. If you try the same image on the Fiery Epson
combo and the result is similar then it's your file. RIP's are a bit
complicated but BestColor can print out a very accurate rendering of a CMYK
file with only slight differences between a printed page.

for this type of work.
The Epson will run the CMYK through the Quickdraw or GDI 3 channel data path
converting all data to 3 channel. The dithering from Epson is exceptional
and will look better than any RIP. If you just need an approximative 4
colour proof Adobe PressReady will get you there, just don't count on the
colours being the same as on press. BestColor DE works on Mac and supports
many desktop printers and is reasonable for serious proofing yet under the
needs of a service bureau.
Do you need a rip if you delivering CMYK? Yes as you're then responsible for
a correct file.
