That makes sense, as the black channel would previously have had a "toe"
below which it had no black ink, and a "curve" that would limit the amount of
black ink used, both caused by the black generation settings involved when
you converted to CMYK. Pasting the gray image into the two active channels,
and manipulationg the channel curves would create a more reasonable
duotone... but you would need to set your CMYK space to maximum black
generation or it might still clip that channel.
