We have had our Epson 5500 for a couple of weeks and I was initially stunned
by how poorly it performs on the paper that our shop has been using for the
last two years on our Epson 3000 (Jet Print Photo. Professional Photo Paper;
Superior Gloss Finish -- we were buying it because Epson does not provide
for a discount when purchasing in bulk as we typically purchase 1,000 sheets
at a time).
It's been pointed out by a couple of folks that I need to use a paper that
matches better with the archival inks that the 5500 uses. I've also been
told that the paper line (Tecco?) in the swatches that came with our
BestColorRIP software is also inappropriate for use with the 5500.
Epson's site lists four 'archival ink' papers:
S041341
Archival Matte
$16.00 (50 Sheets, 8.5" x 11")
$0.32 per sheet
S041405
Premium Luster Photo Paper
$35.00 (50 Sheets, 8.5" x 11")
$0.70 per sheet
S041327
Premium Semi-Gloss Photo Paper
$51.50 (50 Sheets, 8.5" x 11")
$1.03 per sheet
S041351
Watercolor Paper
$25.00 (20 Sheets, 13" x 19")
$1.25 per sheet
What are most folks using when proofing artwork for offset printing? Is
there a source for purchasing these papers in bulk? Are there other viable
alternatives to the Epson paper?
I also heard a rumour that Epson is planning on releasing a newer series of
inks for the 5500 that will have a wider gamut. Is there any merit to the
rumour, or is it just wishful thinking?
thanks,
