This is an example of "color inconstancy". As you noticed, the current
standarized definitions of metamerism require a pair of samples. This is very
well discussed in "Billmeyer and Saltzman's Principles of Color Technology",
Third Edition by Roy S. Berns, in Chapter 4, "Measuring Color Quality". If you
really want to get into the science of color this is a great book to read.
