Main difference that as well the film material of the negative as the
paper you
finaly _print_ at have strong nonlinearities in exposure. On
transparencies
you have the exposure our eye is _pleased_ with.

So the scanning software has to do 1.) inverting (the negative),
2.)removing the
color the film material has and 3.) building the tone reproduction curve (nonlinearity)
the paper has. This is not easy.
