Obviously, based on specs and price alone, the QMS seems the most
attractive one. But that's without having seen any samples...
Ooooh, big mistake...
For machines at this price, insist on samples. Don't trust collective
net.wisdom for what must ultimately be a personal choice.
This is what I did:
1) Select several "problem" images that you thing may not print easily,
2) composite them into a mosaic at 200 dpi,
3) burn multiple copies onto CDR,
4) send them to pre-sales folks at all the companies you are
considering -- it is important that they all have identical source
material to work from.
5) For a multi-thousand dollar printer, cross anyone off the list who
isn't willing to provide you with sample prints from your material.
6) When you get all the prints back, don't trust your own eyes.
Assemble a panel of people whose opinion you respect. Pass the prints
around to them, along with a questionaire.
I did the above process with the Tek, Lexmark, QMS, and HP
tabloid-sized lasers, and ended up with the HP 8500, which WAS NOT my
initial choice before going through a formal process, but has turned
out to be the best choice in my situation.
