I can't speak for third parties, but Apple's ColorSync installers (at least
the newest ones that I have experience with) do version checking at a pretty
low level. For example, ColorSync 3.x won't even install on an OS older than
Mac OS 9.x for compatibility and functionality reasons. And the installer is
smart enough to recognize when a newer version is installed and gives the
user a dialogue with that info.

Apple's installer is doing things correctly. But as John points out, the
mess is with 3rd parties. I don't know how many times I've hosed a more
recent version of ColorSync by installing an Epson driver which installed an
older version of ColorSync. I guess Apple has no control over how a 3rd
party decides to install their software (is there any licensing agreements
from Apple to discourage this? Could they ask that there be a two part
installer so that Epson could deal with the driver and latter deal with
ColorSync and have that installer as intelligent as Apples?). I'm sure there
are others out there doing this like Epson and I'm not trying to single them
out. I do know that it's really common to find multiple copies of ColorSync
installed on users machines, usually due to an install for an Epson printer.

At least we can thank Epson for making a product that IS ColorSync savvy.

Hmmm..I do get off topic.

Yes John, you're right. Yes Andrew you're right too.

And from the number of CB, Bob's and others...you're all right.

But i was off topic. All in all I'm pretty happy with Csync 3.01/3.03. Henrik makes a good point about the UI and it's relationship to the Csync control panel.

More on topic and keeping low level, I'm new to the ICC discussion topics concept by the way, what about those MCH6, 6CLR, MCH8, 8CLR tags anyway? Anybody else run into these on a regular basis.

Got to go do a little research...back in a few...
