Hmm...you're right. It was one of those good Apple ideas, the minimum peripheral hardware is the monitor (a printer is always optional), so build them self-calibrating and self-characterizing for all to be be able to get on board without the cost of third party instruments and software. The VCGT concept wasn't a bad idea either.

The trouble is the UI which is not very simple, if you start from scratch. And the hardware degaussing. And the problem with calibrating using third party software. And the fact that Apple has pulled out of the CRT market and now sells LCDs for the stylish desktop.

I think it made sense to focus on the basic approach introduced in ColorSync 2.5 while few still had third party software and colorimeters. Whether it's still relevant is a question.
