I understand that people get frustrated with color management and take it
out on the equipment but the Fiery RIP is hardly a piece of S--- as was so
eloquently stated. There are many users out there who are using the Epson
with the Fiery RIP in Fine art repro who have gotten excellent results
myself included. However EFI's implementation of ICC Profiles at the RIP
does leave alot to be desired and the EFI RIP is not for everyone. It is
extremely useful if you are dealing with a MAC only network where there is
no Print Server and it has excellent job management features. It is also
easy to implement for those who don't want to learn NT and WIndows/Mac
Networking.
The problem with EFI and ICC Profiles is the manufacturer still believes in
a proprietary closed solution to color management and there are many
features to tweak your file color at the RIP in abscence of ICC Profiles and
color management. These features must be disabled prior to attempting to
profile your printer as their affect on the raw data in the target files
render your profile worthless. While not the cheapest solution The EFI RIP
combined with an upstream profile color server like Praxisoft's ICC Autoflow
yields a superior solution and provides much greater workflow flexability
then applying profiles at the RIP.
