Just a note on the Apple monitor calibration framework introduced with ColorSync 2.5 as I brought the topic up.

The real reason for the monitor calibration framework was the war for control of the monitor during startup. Photoshop came with the Knoll Gamma tool which is a very noisy and not very user-friendly utility. The monitor calibration framework made sure that any and all gamma utilities had a single path to the video system. I could understand the diatribes against the framework from Adobe and many users. The way I see it Apple was quite right that there had to be a solution at OS level to working with the monitor. Even if I don't agree with the UI -:).

It is true that the VCGT framework doesn't work on the PC, but I think we can all name a good deal of other things that don't work on the PC, either.
