It depends on how the HDTV is getting its signal. If its from a computer
(hopefully, a Mac <g>) you can use a spectrophotometer to calibrate the
display to sRGB standard (uses ITU-R709-2 aka HDTV primaries) and D65, gamma
2.2
If the signal is coming from broadcast station there is no provision
(that I am aware of) for calibrating using a spectrophotometer without
software.
