Like any field, color management is made more difficult than it has to be
because people guard information in order to make money with what they know.
The internet is changing that a bit, but there are still elements of things
being made more difficult than they need to be at times.
Also, color management is really fairly new, and dependent on the quickly
shifting capacities of digital devices. That makes it more of a moving
target then some topics.
Let me share with you the materials that helped me get more up to speed,
though I make no claim to the UberGeek status of some folks on the list...
I like the color management materials (CD-ROM and booklet) that Agfa makes.
Very good intro, and the CD-ROM is very well made:

Fraser and Blatner's REAL WORLD PHOTOSHOP 6, which was just released, is the
best work on color management in Photoshop, and is really quite a good book
generally on the topic, too.

The book THE GATF PRACTICAL GUIDE TO COLOR MANAGEMENT is really not that
great, though it's decent, and the organization has other books which are
quite good:

And I haven't read it yet, but BILLMEYER AND SALTZMAN'S PRINCIPLES OF COLOR
TECHNOLOGY has a very high reputation for being the color science bible:

Okay, that's my input!
