In Extensions Manager Control Panel turn off Adobe Gamma, Knoll
Gamma, Default Calibrator, and any monitor software/demo versions you
might have running. Restart. Go to
SystemFolder>ColorSyncProfilesFolder>DisplayFolder and GetInfo on the
alias which resides there. This indicates which profile is actually
in use by the Monitors Control Panel. Trash it. (I use OptiCal which
has PreCal for calibrating RGB-guns. I don't know if PhotoCal has
that, but if it does it's a must do.) Start up PhotoCal and commence
calibration. Give the profile a name unique to your monitor
calibration. When finished, go to Monitors Control Panel and make
sure the profile you just created is in use. Check the alias in the
Displayfolder to make sure it jives wit da one you want. If it does
not, trash the alias again,
Some interesting notes on this. If you have Techtool Protection running in
the background and the Trash Cache is on, trashed alias's will still be able
to find the old originals if they are in this trash cash. So turn that off
too.
I found that if I trashed all the profiles and alias's in the the display
folder and restarted the machine, it still found the profile, presumably
from the colorsync cache or the monitor preferences. So I trashed all of
those too, and upon restart, a colorsync profile called "display profile
258" had become the original. What is this?
I'm pretty sure I have the alias thing figured out. The problem is that I
have two monitors, the laptop lcd, and the crt running out of the vga
output.
The monitors control panel knows which is which. Photocal asks if I want to
make the new profile the "system profile" What does this mean?
The monitors control panel will let me make either the crt or the lcd the
"startup screen." Except for the smiley face mac appearing, what does this
mean?
Another question: when exiting photocal colorsync pops up a check button
saying you have now created a profile. I check that, and then the photocal
window says don't alter anything, etc, so I click the forward button to exit
photocal, and the monitor changes color completely; the contrast comes down
and the grey changes too. Is this supposed to happen? During photocal, the
monitor seems bright and contrasty, as I would expect having the cont. all
the way up. But then upon exiting, it looks not unlike what it did before
the calibration. Granted, I am only comparing how it looked from one
photocal calibration to the next. So maybe there is not that much
difference. This may also be related to the fact that I have two monitors,
the lap top lcd and the crt running off the second video output on the
laptop. The monitors control panel recognizes both monitors correctly, and
I have checked the alias's to make sure the right profile is associated with
the right monitor. In photocal, one of the last questions is do I want to
make the new profile the "system profile. I have done this both ways, as
system and not, and similar results occur.
What does it all mean?...
This at 4am...
I think the monitor is calibrated as good as I can get it without rgb gain
controls. It's a little low on the red, but I cannot get it any warmer
without making it really green. So that is just the phosphors in my
monitor.
sorry for the length,
