Forget PM6.5, if you want this to work at all, you are going to have

As someone who recently finished an 816-page book in Pagemaker, I
think Henrik is being unduly dismissive.
InDesign is good for working on single spreads, but it's still way
too slow for much more than that (reportedly 2.0 will be at least an
order of magnitude faster).
There are, however, some tricks to working in Pagemaker with color management.
1.) If you have more than about 100 profiles in the ColorSync
Profiles folder, PM will crash when you try to turn on color
management. Get rid of all unneccessary profiles before you start.
2.) I recommend converting all linked docs to final CMYK with no
embedded profile. Whenever PageMaker encounters an embedded profile,
it creates a temporary copy. This is true even if they're all teh
same embedded profile -- it makes a copy of each instance.
Eventually, you hit the OS open files limit, and are left with a pub
you can't save, close, or do anything else with.
If you work around these things, PM 6.52 behaves very well indeed. It
only crashed on me once, and didn't damage the pub.
