The problem:
On a semi-regular basis, I have customers submit physical artwork to me.
Artboards, drawings, paintings, etc. that are too large to be scanned
directly. In the past I have sent the artwork to a photo lab or photo
service to have a 4x5 transparency shot of the artwork and then scanned the
artwork. I have the scanner color managed very well and can accurately
reproduce the color of the transparency. The problem I have had on a
reoccuring basis is that the transparency does not match the physical
artwork supplied by the customer. Some of the largest photo labs in my area
(Los Angeles & Orange County, California) digitally shoot the artwork and
then output it on a LightJet to transparencies. In talking with several
companies they will digitally shoot the artboards and supply me with a file,
but seem to be very ignorant or very unwilling to discuss how they are color
managing their digital image capture.
What I am looking for:
Information on finding a way to have artwork either shot to transparency so
that the transparency matches the original, OR finding a company that can do
color accurate digital photography of artboards.
This does not seem to be rocket-science to me, given that it is digital
photography in a fixed lighting setting, but the vendors I am aware seem to
be ignorant of these things.
Thanks,
