It's not abundantly clear which models of RIP now support version 1.4 and
1.5 RIP software, but these versions *DO* allow the user to specify a
profile for the inkjet printer itself. Previously the profiles were
hardwired to a paper type setting and it wasn't possible to create custom
profiles for the inkjet printer itself.
One thing that is still a mystery to me is, what is the reference point
for calibration? When one does a calibration using ColorWise Pro Tools,
the calibration information goes to the RIP and the RIP makes some kind
of judgement call to create a set of adjustment curves to get the
RESPONSE it wants from the device instead of what was measured. For
example if you have a black ink that is substantially more black than the
RIP expects (say a 3rd party black ink), then the RIP will back off on
black ink density once you calibrate. So there is some built-in reference
point of behavior - perhaps this is based on the paper-type setting.
I wonder if it's possible to set up a new paper type that would allow the
user to maximize the full capability of a 3rd party inkset and paper
setup, including specifying new upper limits for density, as well as
total area coverage.
