I always use Rel for the previewing phase. The only intent that would be
altered would be the conversion from the press profile -> PCS. At the moment
I use Abs for that. If I use Rel then that "turns off" paper white
simulation, as the white point is adjusted. What I was asking was if turning
off the simulation of paper white is really necessary. If you're proofing
on the same stock as the press the white point would be the same. I a
profile was created for the proofer using that stock you'd get the same
result using Rel or Abs right?

The principle is simple enough -

a. If your destination stock is dark, you can't softproof on the monitor with relative colorimetric asthe image looks off. Here you need to use AbsCol for the monitor transform. Set the background in PS6 to L82 a0 b0 so you get a contrast that isn't strong (as compared to a black background).

For the proof printing transform, you will want to use RelCol, if you manage to find a paper as dark as the destination stock.

You can say it's ironic, but proofing newsprint which is the humblest of printing media is actually the greatest challenge -:).

b. If your destination stock is bright, use RelCol both for the monitor softproof and the proof print transforms.

I'll post a little ABC on this and ISO 12647 proof verification in a few days, just haven't had the time.

This workflow simplifies using proofing media that are close to the actual paper stock.

Hope this helps -:).
