Dot gain settings in Photoshop

Usually we separate our images using our scanner profiles, or customised
versions of the supplied PS Euroscale profiles (higher gain, lighter black
etc).

Yesterday however, I made the mistake of tinkering with the dot gain curves
in Photoshop and my reasonably accurate euroscale profile turned my
separations to a blue/red mush.

All of the supplied Photoshop profiles have dot gain settings that set the
cyan about 4 points higher than the MYK settings.

If you put in some genuine press values -- which would normally show cyan
and magenta to be similar, yellow lower and black higher -- you end up with
some hideous looking results on our proofers (Analogue Cromalin and
Best/Epson 5000).

Dan Margulis recently posted that this too-high cyan value was a *last
minute kludge* implemented by Thomas Knoll because Photoshop separations
always appeared to be too cool.

Is this true? And if it is, how come it's still being kludged in version 6?
