So then a 16-bit RGB file can theoretically produce 281 trillion colors,
right? Then how did Bruce arrive at his statement that a 16-bit RGB file
produces "almost 3 billion" colors?
I mean... a trillion here, a billion there and pretty soon you need a
bigger box of crayons!
Lets not forget that, as I think Bruce mentioned, we cannot ever see this many.
I mean, as a rough calculation (and I do mean rough here, lets not
argue too much about Lab boundaries or the validity of the color L 0,
a 100, b -100):
One choice of Lab encoding gives: L 100 values, a 256 values, b 256
values. 100*256*256 = 6,553,600.. give or take a few hundred
thousand....
now, if we could only match up the encoding methods with the
reproductive and perceptual ranges and resolution....
oh yeah, right, that's what this list is about......<g>
