Given the fact that most colours produced by a printer are a mixture of
several dots of a very limited amount of primery colours, metamerism will
allways be a problem in the realm of printing. I'm afraid 'less dramatic
shift' is in fact all you can hope for.
In architecture the problem is solved by measuring the spectral values of a
colour, and then reproduce these exact values by computing a matching mix of
pigments. You don't need the original pigments to make the match. In most
cases the computer can provide another mix with the same values. That's nice
because it enables perfect matching from, say, ceramics to paint.
