The idea of converting to a large artificial CMYK space to gain a black
channel, manipulate that channel, then convert back to RGB is problematic in
several regards. I'll only address the most obvious: if you seperate some of
the RGB data to black (via some CMYK engine) and leave other on the color
channels, and then change the data in the K channel, you will end up with
different densities when you recombine... so you might as well stay in RGB
(avoiding a whole raft of other problems I'm not covering) and just select
the tones you wish to effect with one or more of Photoshop's tools... such as
the global color curve.
